My son’s 8th birthday is coming up in 2 weeks and for his birthday we’re going on a ski trip to Colorado with his aunt (my sister) and his cousin. He doesn’t know about it yet, but we’re in full planning mode. I pulled together all of the essentials for a flight, skiing, and hanging out at the hotel. Are you planning a getaway this winter? Check out my favorites.
Whether it’s your first adventure or a tradition you cherish, having the right essentials can make the difference between a smooth, fun-filled trip and a chilly, stressful one. Here’s a checklist to ensure you’re both ready to hit the slopes and make lasting memories.
My Top Ski Essentials
1. Clothing to Keep You Warm and Dry
Layering is key when skiing. Make sure you both have:
- Base layers: Moisture-wicking thermal tops and bottoms to keep sweat away.
- Insulating layers: Fleece or lightweight puffer jackets for warmth.
- Waterproof outerwear: Ski jackets and pants to keep snow out. I love Helly Hanson and Obermyer for our outerwear.
- Accessories: Insulated gloves, neck gaiters, ski socks, and a good pair of goggles. Don’t forget warm hats for après-ski downtime!
The Smartwool brand is my favorite ski sock for my kids and me
2. Ski Gear
- Ski boots, skis, and poles: If you don’t have your own, research rental options ahead of time. Many ski resorts allow you to reserve gear online. We bought our skis from a local shop which makes a big difference for saving time when you arrive.
- Helmets: Safety first! Make sure they fit snugly and comfortably.
- Boot bag/Ski Bag: For flying or even traveling locally with your gear, invest in a ski bag and boot bag. I have these two by Thule and they are durable and compact. My son has a smaller boot bag to carry his own gear.
3. Travel Necessities
- Passes and reservations: Confirm your lift tickets, lessons, and lodging in advance, especially during peak season.
- Travel-friendly snacks: Granola bars, trail mix, or dried fruit can keep you both energized between runs.
- Entertainment: A deck of cards, books, or travel games for downtime at the lodge.

4. Personal Care and Safety
- Sunscreen and lip balm: The sun’s rays are intense on snowy slopes—protect your skin and lips! I always mange to forget this and end up buying something at the resort for $25. Plan ahead!
- I love Supergoop!I use their sunscreens year round. I also love this powder sunscreen and use it on my kids. Supergoop! (Re)setting 100% Mineral Powder, Translucent – 0.15 oz – Makeup Setting Powder + Broad Spectrum SPF 35
- First aid kit: Include basics like bandages, pain relievers, and hand warmers. Sometimes I think my son only skis so he can use the hand warmers.
- Hydration: Bring reusable water bottles or hydration packs to stay refreshed. For longer ski days grab a CamelBak.
5. Non-Ski Apparel
Don’t forget casual and comfortable clothes for exploring when you’re not on the slopes. I just added these to my cart for our trip!
Final Tip
Remember, the goal is to have fun! Stay flexible, plan for breaks, and embrace the moments of laughter (and maybe a few tumbles) on the slopes. With the right preparation, your ski trip will be an unforgettable experience.
